Ancient well tidy-up (April 2026)

Volunteers from Rosemarket Local History Society (RLHS) and Rosemarket Community Council worked together to tidy-up one of the ancient wells that can be found around the village.

Located after exiting the village on West Street heading towards Johnston on the left-hand side going down the hill out of the village, the well is believed to date back over 100 years (exact date not known).

Several years’ worth of overgrown bramble, ivy and weeds were removed, along with an array of discarded rubbish inside the well itself.

There were several wells within and around Rosemarket in earlier centuries. This was one of the three main wells in that period and it remained an active source of water through until the mid 20th century when a mains water supply was brought to the village and piped to all individual homes.

Family members came here, and to the other wells, often several times each week, and collected the water in buckets and cans which was brought back to their own homes. This would have been the prime source of the family drinking water and it was also used for all of their cooking, bathing and laundry purposes.
